OSU Graduate Chosen to Head Senate

Sen. Mike Morgan was elected today as President Pro Tempore of the Oklahoma Senate. He replaces Sen. Cal Hobson who resigned his position. Morgan represents District 21, which includes Stillwater. He holds a bachelor of science degree from OSU and has served as an OSU adjunct professor of business law. His juris doctorate is from the University of Tulsa.

OSU selected as National Center of Academic Excellence

OSU has earned a coveted federal designation that will help attract more students and more research grants. Dr. Mark Weiser, director of the Center for Telecommunications and Network Security at OSU, says the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) has chosen OSU as its newest National Center of Academic Excellence for Information Assurance Education. Weiser says the benefits include an opportunity to offer students in various majors a special graduate certification that many will desire if they intend to go into any field that involves computer system security. Women’s Studies Program Sponsors Internationally Known Speaker

The OSU Women's Studies Program has announced that “bell hooks,” an internationally known author and lecturer, will be on campus Tuesday, March 29 for a lecture and public reception. bell hooks (Gloria Watkins) is currently on the faculty at Berea College in Kentucky. She is well known for her interdisciplinary writings on a number of topics, including gender, race, teaching, and the significance of media for contemporary culture. She has published numerous books and articles. Her lecture, "Creating the Beloved Community: Ending Domination," begins at 7 p.m. in the Student Union Theater.  A book signing will follow, with books available for purchase from the Student Union Bookstore.  Admission is free, and seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis. She also will participate in a conversation and reception at 2:30 p.m., March 29 in the Willard Hall Living Room.  This event is open to the public. The OSU Library Presents:

  • Dr. John Mowen, Regents Professor in the Spears School of Business, with a slide show and lecture on his newest book “Beyond Leadership: The Beacon and the GREAT ROCK” on Thursday, March 24, at 4 p.m. in the Library’s Peggy V. Helmerich Browsing Room .
  •  Stillwater's Carol Headrick performs a monologue review of “Anatomy of Me,” the autobiography of Fannie Hurst, a literary trendsetter who used her celebrity to promote racial equality and women’s rights. The performance is scheduled Friday, March 25, at noon in the Helmerich Browsing Room. This is a brown bag presentation, so bring lunch. Drinks and dessert will be provided.

  •  To OSU student Nick Rasmussen of Tekamah, Neb. who was awarded a Morris K. Udall Foundation Scholarship for his senior year. The zoology major is only the third OSU student to receive this scholarship. OSU System CEO and President David J. Schmidly, along with Dr. James Shaw, head of Zoology, and others surprised Nick with the announcement during one of his classes Tuesday. ‘Romantic’ Trolley Cruises OSU for One-Day Test Run

You may have noticed a slight change on The Bus’ Black route today.  An old-fashioned trolley was here for a one-day test run. OSU Transit Services was test driving the trolley for the on-campus route to decide if it will work better than the big buses, and to find out if the OSU community might prefer a different kind of ride. No decisions have been made yet. Comments so far have been favorable. You can voice your opinion by calling OSU Transit Services at 744-6525.

Voting for Pete’s Sake: Pistol Pete Surges Ahead in ‘Mascot Madness’

The OSU family is turning out in force to get Pistol Pete to the Elite Eight as “Mascot Madness” continues. Voting at http://msn.foxsports.com/cbk/story/3480502 continues until Thursday night. At press time, with almost 25,000 votes cast, Pete had captured 69 percent of the ballots, compared to 31 percent for the Hamburglar mascot from Texas Tech.

·        Mens tennis beat Colorado, 4-3, after being down 3-0 in Boulder, Co., Tuesday. On the same day, senior Mark Van Elden was named the Big XII Player of the Week. The No. 11 ranked Cowboys travel to Lubbock this weekend to face 12th-ranked Texas Tech.

·        Women’s softball hosts Tulsa at 6:30 p.m. in Cowgirl Stadium. The Cowgirls have won 11 of their last 12, with each opponent held to two runs or less. 

·        John and Joey need your help. John Lucas and Joey Graham are current nominees for the NCAA Senior Class Award, honoring the outstanding NCAA Division 1 basketball player. The two Pokes are among 10 nationwide finalists for the award, which recognizes seniors who use their full four years of eligibility and excel in the classroom, as well as the court. ·        Remember to watch the Cowboys vs. Arizona tomorrow night at 8:57 p.m. on CBS in the Sweet 16 !!! Go Pokes!!
