Philosopher-in-Residence Program Will Feature Nationally Known Speaker

For their 30th anniversary Philosopher-in-Residence program, OSU’s Friends of the Forms, the Department of Philosophy and the Norris Foundation are presenting Dr. Brian Orend, director of International Studies, and associate professor of philosophy and political science at the University of Waterloo in Canada. Presentations include "Justice After War: Afghanistan and Iraq" on Thursday, April 7 at 7 p.m. in 112 Classroom and "Supreme Emergencies & Ethics: From World War II to the War on Terror" on Friday, April 8 at 3:30 p.m. in Case Study I of the Student Union. Both presentations are free and open to the public.                                                                 

Budke is New Women’s Basketball Coach

At a 3 p.m. news conference today, OSU Director of Athletics Harry Birdwell announced that Kurt Budke is the new OSU Cowgirl Head Basketball Coach. Budke comes to OSU from Louisiana Tech, where he was 80-16 as a Division I head coach.

OSU is Host to Sustainability Conference

Oklahoma Sustainability Network's Fourth annual conference, "Building Bridges Toward a Sustainable Oklahoma," is scheduled Friday, April 8 at the Wes Watkins Center. The one-day conference features L. Hunter Lovins, co-author of "Natural Capitalism: Creating the Next Industrial Revolution," as keynote speaker and Miles Tolbert, Oklahoma Secretary of the Environment, for a luncheon talk. Sessions will cover such topics as rainwater harvesting, solar retrofitting your hot water tank, calculations for passive heat use, watershed and wetlands enhancement, Oklahoma's sustainable food choices, faith-based ecology, influencing public policy for sustainability and more. Registration, which includes all sessions, continental breakfast, breaks and lunch, is $25 ($15 for students) if registered before March 30.  Registration after March 30 is $40 and $25 for students. Sponsors include OSU, the OSU School of Architecture and ECO-OSU.  Dr. Michael Smolen and Dr. Khaled Mansy from OSU are among the presenters, and students from the OSU School of Chemical Engineering will display their fuel cell vehicle. Other OSU exhibitors include the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service and OSU Environmental Science Program. ‘Brown Bag It Chamber Music Series’ Tuesday at the Library

The OSU Department of Music and Edmon Low Library Staff Association have partnered to present the “Brown Bag it Chamber Music Series.” The series gives the OSU community an opportunity to enjoy the talents of student musicians in a casual environment. The next installment will feature the Kandinsky Woodwind Quintet at noon, Tuesday, March 29 in the Peggy V. Helmerich Browsing Room. The event is free and open to the public. Guests are encouraged to bring their lunch. Drinks and dessert will be provided.

Ketchum House Sponsoring Art Auction

The Ketchum Native American House, located in OSU’s Allen Residence Hall, is sponsoring an art auction March 30-31.   The come-and-go silent auction, titled “The End of the Blank Wall,” will be in the Griffith Community Center, located in the North Monroe apartment and suite area.  The artwork consists of all original pieces.  Proceeds will benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital

‘bell hooks’ Here Tomorrow

Don’t forget that “bell hooks,” an internationally known author and lecturer, will be on campus Tuesday, March 29 for a lecture and public reception. bell hooks (Gloria Watkins) is currently on the faculty at Berea College in Kentucky and is well known for her interdisciplinary writings on a number of topics, including gender, race, teaching, and the significance of media for contemporary culture. Her lecture, "Creating the Beloved Community: Ending Domination," begins at 7 p.m. in the Student Union Theater.  Admission is free, and seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis. She also will participate in a conversation and reception at 2:30 p.m., March 29 in the Willard Hall Living Room.  This event is open to the public. One Final Shot at the Final Four

Although the team fell a little short, Pistol Pete continues the “March to the Arch” in the battle of the mascots. With more than 29,000 votes cast, Pete is slightly behind Vilanova in a contest for the best basketball mascot. You can vote at http://msn.foxsports.com/cbk/story/3480502

OSU SportLines

·       Women’s Track and Field had a successful weekend with half the team competing in Tulsa and the other half in Palo Alto, Calif.  At the Tulsa Duels, Delisa McClain won the Hammer throw, set a school record and qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Delanor Kirkpatrick and Brandi Broaddus finished third and sixth, respectfully, also in the hammer throw.  At the Stanford Invitational, Barbora Kuncova and Mary Davies finished twelfth and thirteenth in the 10,000-meter run, automatically qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.  Michelle Prowse finished second in the 3K steeplechase, also qualifying for Nationals.

·       Baseball captured the three-game series against No. 10 Baylor for the first time since 1997.  The Cowboys won Friday’s game, 7-1, with every Cowboy getting a hit.  After Baylor won 6-3 on Saturday, OSU took the series with a 3-2 victory. The Pokes 19-8 overall and 4-2 in conference.

·       Men’s Tennis beat No. 12 Texas Tech 6-1 Saturday, ending the Red Raiders 17-match win streak.  The eleventh-ranked Cowboys will face SMU in Dallas Wednesday at 2 p.m.

·       Women’s Tennis was shut out by No. 29 Notre Dame Saturday, falling 7-0 in Edmond. The Cowgirls are now 4-9 on the season and 1-4 in conference play.

·       Cowgirl Softball split its doubleheader with Missouri Friday, winning the first game, then dropping game two.  The Cowgirls ended Missouri’s 17-game win streak and moved to 24-10 overall.

·       Football held its first official scrimmage Saturday morning at Boone Pickens Stadium.  The starting quarterback and running back positions are still up for grabs.
