Cancer Claims Veteran OSU Professor
We were saddened to hear that Dr. Zuhair Al-Shaieb, professor of geology,
died Sunday night after a yearlong struggle with cancer. Dr. Al-Shaieb,
known as "Dr. Al" to his students and colleagues, was a faculty member in
the OSU School of Geology since 1973. He served as department head between
1992-1999. He was a highly regarded expert in the petroleum geology of
Oklahoma and published many outstanding works related to oil and gas
exploration in this state. His work focused on oil and gas reservoirs of
the Anadarko basin in southern Oklahoma. He survived by his wife Becky, a
son, Johnny, and daughter, Nikki.
Homecoming Rally to Honor Team is Tuesday - Lt. Gov. Fallin Will Attend
OSU Athletics is host for a season celebration in Gallagher-Iba Arena on
Tuesday, April 6. Lt. Gov. Mary Fallin plans to join OSU fans as they
celebrate the accomplishments of the men's basketball team. Orange is
recommended. Doors open at 5:30 pm, and the celebration begins at 7 p.m.
Merchandise will available for sale. The cheerleaders, band, Pistol Pete,
OSU President David Schmidly, Coach Sutton, AD Harry Birdwell and the
players will all be there.
KOSU Reaches Goal in Record Time
KOSU Radio condensed a seven-day fund raiser into three days last week, and
listeners responded by helping the station reach its $100,000 goal.
Part of Hall of Fame Closed Periodically During Children's Events Wednesday
Thousands of school children will be on campus Wednesday, April 7 for the
annual Best of America and "I" Wonder Fair events. Best of America is a
motivational program at Gallagher-Iba Arena, sponsored by the Athletic
Department. The "I" Wonder Fair is a discovery program on Willard Lawn and
is sponsored by the College of Education. Due to the large numbers of
children, Hall of Fame Avenue between Duck Street and South Hester will be
closed for short periods of time between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3:30
p.m. Commuter students who park in Lot 104 (POSSE Lot) should park in Lot
1, north of the OSU baseball field, or Lot 74, west of the OSU track field.

- The College of Business Administration's second annual CEO Day features
OSU alumni Robert Farnsworth, CEO of PlayCore, Inc.; Carl Thoma, CEO of
Thoma Cressey Equity Partners; and Steven J. Malcolm, head of Williams.
The business leaders will offer students career insights during a forum
Tuesday, April 6, from 2-4 p.m. in the Student Union Theater.
- The OSU Symphony will give its last concert for the 2003-2004 Season at 8
p.m., April 8 in the Seretean Center for the Performing Arts. The concert
will feature OSU cello professor Lawrence Stomberg in a performance of
the Lalo Cello Concerto. In addition, two master's students will conduct
works by Mozart and Tchaikovsky, and OSU Symphony conductor Richard Prior
will perform Schubert's "Unfinished" Symphony. Tickets at $5 for general
admission and $3 for students and senior citizens are available at the
door or by calling 744-8997.
- Best-selling author Iris Chang, author of the New York Times bestseller
"The Rape of Nanking" and "The Chinese in America," will deliver a
keynote lecture and autograph books at the Student Union Theater Tuesday,
April 6 at 7 p.m. The Student Union Activities Board is coordinating
Chang’s visit to OSU.
- Friends of the Forms Presents "Summoning the Poet," by Heather Wilburn of
the OSU Philosophy Department at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, April 8 in Case
Study One of the Student Union. The lecture is free and open to the
public.
- OSU Human Resources is hosting a Benefits Fair on Tuesday, April 6-7 in
412 Student Union. Employees who are eligible for benefits (working at
least .75 FTE in a continuous regular position), will be interested in
the informational programs offered during the fair, including an
opportunity to hear about long-term care and the new Group Long-Term
Care. Sessions on long-term care are Tuesday, April 6 at 8 a.m. and again
at 12:30 p.m. More details are at
