President Schmidly at Ceremonial Bill Signing for Bonds

OSU System CEO and President David Schmidly joined Gov. Brad Henry and other college and university leaders at the Capitol this afternoon for a ceremonial signing of the $500 million college campus improvement program. The Higher Education Bond Issue will finance 140 construction projects in 36 communities around the state. The measure was officially signed into law last week.

Architect of Controversial NYC Sports Venue Speaks Tonight at OSU

A principal architect and founding partner in the firm that designed the proposed $1.9-billion New York Sports and Convention Center that has been the focus of national media attention due to debate over its cost and chosen site will speak on campus this evening (4/5). Bill Pedersen, of Kohn, Pedersen and Fox, will speak at 7:30 in 313 Classroom Building as part of the School of Architecture’s Architecture Week.  Developers hope to lure the 2010 Super Bowl and the 2012 Olympics to Manhattan and bring home the New York Jets from New Jersey by building the complex. Phoenix Awards and Graduate Symposium is April 7

OSU’s Outstanding Graduate Teachers and Students will be honored during the annual Phoenix and Research Symposium Awards reception Thursday, April 7 from 5-7 p.m. in the Centennial Lounge (301 Student Union). The event is sponsored by the Graduate and Professional Student Government Association, the Graduate College and the Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer. The outstanding graduate faculty member and master's and doctoral students will be honored, along with graduate and undergraduate Research Symposium paper and poster presenters. Reception Will Honor OSU’s Student Employee of the Year

A reception to honor OSU’s Employee of the Year and this year’s nominees is scheduled April 13 at 3 p.m. in the Willard Hall lounge. Everyone’s invited. OSU student Kris Lemoins is the  2004-2005 OSU-Stillwater Student Employee of the Year.  He was selected from a pool of 40 nominees and will compete with students from 20 other universities for a similar regional award.  Kris does double time as an employee of the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and CEAT Student Services. Oklahoma Still Low on College Degrees

Oklahoma needs a “fill-up” on college degrees, according to an article in today’s Tulsa World. The article reports that Oklahoma is among states with the lowest percent of residents holding bachelor's degrees, even though degrees can mean much higher incomes. The information comes from the U.S. Census Bureau. According to the article, the mean annual income in Tulsa for persons with bachelor's degrees is $47,148. For those with master's degrees, it is $72,677. For high school graduates, income is $21,826, while those who did not graduate from high school earned about $15,350 a year. The Census Bureau reported that Oklahoma ranked 43rd among the 50 states and the District of Columbia in percentage of residents with bachelor's degrees or higher.

After 40 Years, OSU Students Still Sing in Spring

OSU’s annual Spring Sing production celebrates its 40th anniversary April 16 at Gallagher-Iba Arena. The show, scheduled for Saturday at 6:30 p.m. during Mom’s Weekend, includes performances from 11 fraternity and sorority groups. Spring Sing will be supporting Coaches vs. Cancer this year. A portion of each ticket sale will go to the charity, with a goal of $5,000. The Spring Sing steering committee, which is made up of student volunteers, plans and organizes the entire show.  Students do everything from designing programs to running the light and sound equipment. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door, with $1 from each ticket being donated to Coaches vs. Cancer.  Advance tickets are available at the Student Union Hub, beginning April 11.  The day of the show, tickets will be for sale at the north entrance to Gallagher-Iba Arena, beginning at 5 p.m. For ticket information, call Clint James at (580) 278-9095

Last Call for Culture

This is your last opportunity this school year to join Student Union Activities Board and University Dining Services for a night of culture.  This month’s cultural dinner, Japanese style, is scheduled Thursday, April 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Starlight Terrace on the fourth floor of the Student Union. For only $7.50, or one meal swipe, students, faculty and staff can taste the authentic cuisine of the region, including beef Sukiyaki, sushi, Japanese style steamed rice, vegetable tempura, Japanese fruit pie and much more.

·        Men’s golf continues play at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate today in Austin. The team ended Monday in second place, thirteen shots behind Florida.

·        Women’s equestrian crowned seven regional champions this weekend and qualified 19 for the national qualifying show.

·        Women’s Tennis shut out Iowa State this weekend, 7-0.

·        Paula Ogunbanjo and Delisa McClain led the women’s Track and Field team to an impressive showing at the UTA Invitational over the weekend, winning the triple jump and hammer throw, respectively.
