OSU Signs Agreement to Bring Vietnamese Scholars to Campus

OSU and the Vietnam Education Foundation (VEF) have signed an agreement to allow top scholars from Vietnam to enroll at OSU for graduate training in science and technology. The agreement will take effect immediately to accommodate VEF Fellows, beginning in fall, 2005. VEF Fellows will be jointly supported by VEF and OSU. VEF pays the students’ initial expenses and also awards the university a stipend per student for two years of study. Dr. Gordon Emslie, OSU’s associate vice president for research and dean of the OSU Graduate College, said VEF is a special initiative by the U.S. Congress to bring the United States and Vietnam closer through educational exchanges. Good Chemistry Continues at OSU – Department Chairman is Chemist of the Year

Dr. Neil Purdie, professor and chairman of the OSU Chemistry Department, has been honored by the Oklahoma Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) with the 2005 Oklahoma Chemist Award.  ACS is the most prestigious chemistry organization in the nation. It honored Purdie for his long and distinguished career and also for his extensive body of research, which includes a project to solve one of the most important problems in medicine. Purdie is researching a reliable way to measure blood lipids (fats) in a single test. The fats most often implicated in heart disease, obesity, diabetes and hypertension are cholesterol and long-chain fatty acids. He says models based only on cholesterol numbers do not reliably predict one's chances of getting heart disease. Adding numbers for fatty acids, which are not measured in current tests, would help doctors detect warning signs much earlier and with more confidence.

State Revenues up for March

The Office of State Finance reports that state revenues continue to climb. Revenues for March totaled $353.8 million, about 6.7 percent above the prior year and 10.5 percent above the state’s official estimate. “Revenue collections remain strong,” said Scott Meacham, director of the Office of State Finance. “While March typically is one of our worst months for individual income tax collections because of the high level of refunds, receipts from that source were well above both the prior year and the estimate. The gross production tax on natural gas and sales tax also continues to out-perform both estimated and prior year collections.” You can read more about the report at http://www.osf.state.ok.us/
