Bells Will Toll and OSU Flags will Fly at Half Staff for Bombing Anniversary

Bells will toll and flags on the OSU campus will fly at half staff tomorrow to mark the tenth anniversary of the Murrah Building bombing. Governor Brad Henry has ordered state and American flags at all state agencies flown at half staff to honor the victims and survivors.  At 9:02 a.m., the Edmon Low Library bells will toll 19 times in honor of the 19 children who were killed in the bombing. Following the bells, OSU’s Air Force ROTC will conduct a ceremony on the library lawn and conduct a 21-gun salute. A living memorial to the bombing is on the OSU campus.  One of the seedlings of the famous “survivor tree” is located south of Willard Hall.

OSU Optical Sensor Technology Keeps Crops and Farmers’ Wallets Green!

An OSU optical sensor technology that helps farmers save money is the topic of an Agriculture Online article. The GreenSeeker technology was developed at OSU a few years ago and is now licensed to NTech Industries.  The machine uses infrared energy to “sense” crop health and calculate precise nitrogen applications, thus saving money.  According to the article, tests on several hundred acres of cornfields in Iowa, Illinois and Minnesota resulted an average decrease of 34.7 pounds of fertilizer per acre.  The average per-acre increase in gross profit was $18.26.  Yield also increased from 190.1 to 193 bushels per acre. In an earlier test, nitrogen use was reduced 58 percent on one 77-acre plot in Illinois, increasing the grower's profit more than $40 per acre over conventional practices for that year.

OSU-OKC Will Help Train Nurses for Long-Term Health Assignments

OSU-OKC and the Oklahoma Health Care Authority (OHCA), in collaboration with various state agencies, have joined forces to develop a pilot program to certify nurses’ aides to work at long-term care facilities. The first classes will begin the week of May 16 and will be available at no cost for qualified Oklahoma and Logan County residents who earn certification and gain employment at a Medicaid long-term care facility for at least 12 months.  OSU-OKC will provide curriculum designed to prepare students to complete the state’s nurse aide competency examination.  For more information, contact Sharlene Bear at (405) 945-3373.
