State Regents Approve 2004-05 Tuition and Fee Rates

The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education met yesterday and approved 2004-2005 tuition and fee rates for students at OSU and all other Oklahoma colleges and universities. In-state tuition rates at Oklahoma's public institutions of higher education will increase bt an average of 9.2 percent, which is lower than limits set by the Oklahoma Legislature. Nonresident undergraduate tuition and mandatory fees will increase an average of 10.2 percent. At OSU, the average annual increase for a full-time resident undergraduate student will be $286. The average annual increase for a full-time nonresident undergraduate will be $1,258. State Paying Less of the Bill for Higher Education

The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education say that nearly 75 percent of the $97.7 million in new funds received by higher education institutions next year will come from tuition and fee increases and not from the state. In 1988, state appropriations accounted for 75.3 percent of the general operating budget for Oklahoma's higher education institutions. For the OSU System, state funding now represents less than one-third of the operating budget.

Cowgirl Rodeo Team Celebrates National Championship

The media didn't cover this one much, but the OSU Cowgirl Rodeo Team recently returned as national champions from the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo. Cowgirls Audra Magee, Gretchen Benbenek and Brenna Herrington won the women’s team title with 495 total points, soundly dominating the competition. Magee was champion of the women’s all-around, and Benbenek contributed points by finishing third in the average barrel racing standings. The team is coached by Joe and Sally Vielma. All this is even more impressive because the coaches are volunteers and team members pay for all their equipment and most expenses.
