According to Federal Bureau of Investigation statistics, Oklahoma State University is the safest campus in the Big 12 Conference, and OSUās Police are doing everything they can to keep it that way.
One of the departmentās most innovative programs is OSUās emergency blue light phone system that instantly connects someone needing immediate assistance to a 911 operator at the touch of a button. OSU has 63 phones located in strategic places throughout campus, and 10 to12 more phones are being added in the Greek Life area.
The system, which has been in place for 16 years, was designed with the promise of providing ćimmediate help out of the blue.ä Other universities across the country have modeled their own programs after OSUās blue phone system.
The OSU Police Department is dedicated to providing a safe, protected and orderly environment for students, faculty and staff, said Police Chief Everett Eaton.
OSUās police force is one of the best in the nation and was the first police force in the state to receive accreditation from the Oklahoma Association of Chiefs of Police.
ćAll campus police officers undergo an extensive selection process and meet state mandated training requirements,ä Eaton said.
In addition, OSU police and City of Stillwater police enjoy an excellent working relationship.
The OSU Police Department offers a full range of police resources, which include area patrols, criminal investigations, crime prevention, facilities security analysis and event planning, as well as parking management and enforcement.
In addition, members of the department serve on university and community committees, provide training and specialized presentations to campus organizations and living groups, participate in the design and installation of safety and traffic control devices and act as special advisors to all campus departments and administration.
In addition to providing police services for the main OSU-Stillwater campus, officers also provide protection, including lake patrol and water rescue operations, at OSUās Lake Carl Blackwell and surrounding recreational areas.
Eaton says the department always strives to enhance a positive community atmosphere and to provide friendly and efficient police protection.
ćFor the OSU Police, Īserviceā isnāt just a word or part of a catchy slogan, but a way of life,ä Eaton said.
