Every spring thousands of students and their families begin applying for financial aid for the next school year by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The Oklahoma State University Office of Scholarships and Financial Assistance is offering families assistance in filing the application via the world wide web. FAFSA on the Web, provided by the U.S. Department of Education at www.fafsa.ed.gov, is available to anyone with access to the internet.

Professional staff from the OSU Office of Scholarships and Financial Assistance will be available on two Saturdays in February to answer questions and help students and their families file the FAFSA on the web. On Saturday, February 13th, staff will be available from 1:00 - 4:30 pm on the OSU campus in Stillwater in 408 Classroom Building and at OSU-Tulsa in Room 2315 Main Hall. OSU-Tulsa is located at 700 N. Greenwood in Tulsa. On February 27th, staff will be available from 9:00 am to noon in 408 Classroom Building at OSU-Stillwater.

To ensure adequate resources are available, students and families who plan to utilize this service are encouraged to RSVP to the OSU Office of Scholarships and Financial Assistance, either by email at finaid@okway.okstate.edu or by phone at (405) 744-6604. Families with local Tulsa dialing access can contact the office by calling 584-0300.

"We look forward to helping people actually complete with FAFSA on the Web while they are here," says Charles Bruce, director of scholarships and financial assistance at OSU. "By applying electronically, families save time and reduce the likelihood of errors on the application. We strongly encourage families to take advantage of the electronic application process."

The information students and parents put on the FAFSA is used to determine the amount of money the family may be able to contribute to the student's education for the academic year, referred to as the Expected Family Contribution. Financial aid offices use this information to determine the amount of grant, loan and/or work assistance for which the student may be eligible.

Traditionally, the FAFSA application process has involved mailing a paper form to the federal processor, who forwards information to each school indicated by the student. In the past few years, the U.S. Department of Education has introduced electronic applications designed to decrease both the amount of time required to complete the process and reduce errors commonly made by students and families when applying.

FAFSA on the Web is a free U.S. Department of Education web site where students can complete a FAFSA online and submit it via the Internet. Most students will also need to print a signature page when applying via the web. Once the student, and parent in some cases, has signed the page, it is mailed to the federal processor and is matched up with the electronic application submitted via the web.

FAFSA on the Web can be accessed on a personal computer or a Macintosh. Students who have applied for financial aid in previous years may be able to submit the Renewal FAFSA via the web as well. It is important for students to apply for financial assistance as early as possible.
