Dr. Mike Lorenz, interim dean of OSU's College of Veterinary Medicine, congratulates Mindy Joyner on receiving a $2500 scholarship from the Western Veterinary Conference.
Mindy Joyner, a junior in the College of Veterinary medicine at Oklahoma State University was recently selected to receive a Western Veterinary Conference student scholarship.

This is only the second year for these prestigious $2,500 scholarships to be given. And, in addition to the scholarship, Joyner will receive a $1,000 stipend to attend the 75th Annual Western Veterinary Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada on Feb. 17-20. This is one of the largest conferences in the world for veterinarians and hospital staff.

Joyner is from Concord, North Carolina and received a BS in Animal Science, and completed a year toward an MS degree in Nutrition from North Carolina State University in Raleigh before entering veterinary school at OSU. Joyner says she plans either to enter a career in mixed animal practice or teach.

Joynerâs work experience includes serving as a veterinary assistant at the Cabarrus Emergency Veterinary Clinic and South Ridge Veterinary Hospital in Kannapolis, NC, and working as a farm assistant at the North Carolina State University Swine Unit in Raleigh, NC.

Dr. Jack Walther, Western Veterinary Conference scholarship chairman, said the conference is providing the scholarships and stipends to one student from each of North Americaâs 27 veterinary schools as a way to help students who are dealing with the high cost of veterinary education become involved with others in the veterinary profession.

ãWe have invited 27 of the brightest and best emerging leaders of the profession to join us in Las Vegas. We will have 1,100 hours of instruction in 42 subject areas in clinical and sub-clinical veterinary medicine. They will meet the world leaders in veterinary medicine and hopefully go away knowing how veterinary medicine operates in the real world,ä Walther said.

Walther said members of the board of the Western Veterinary Conference developed the criteria for the scholarship and veterinary colleges made the final selections.

Dr. Michael Lorenz, interim dean of the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine, said, ãI am very excited that the Western Veterinary Conference has developed this scholarship. It will provide an excellent opportunity for students from every school to get a close up look at organized veterinary medicine, and become acquainted with the leaders in veterinary medicine. I hope it will also show students how important it is to be involved and take a leadership role in their profession.ä
