Amber Horn, a 38-year-old grandmother, started veterinary school this year at OSU. She says it's something she always wanted to do...she just had her kids first.
Although her appearance doesn't fit the stereotype of a "granny," veterinary medicine first year student Amber Horn is proud to admit she's a grandmother·twice!
The 38-year-old Cushing resident and mother of five says she always enjoyed the biological sciences in high school and always intended to go to college·she just had her kids first. Her oldest daughter is married and has two children, the next oldest just started college, and the remaining three are still at home.
College is not new to her, she said. She has been a part-time student for about the last ten years. But being a veterinarian has been a dream of hers for a long time, and she decided to go for it.
In addition to 19 hours of classes, and countless hours of study and lab per week, she also finds time to home school her three children who are still at home. "It's not as hard as it sounds," she said. "They're good kids, and they all have specific responsibilities. The house is usually picked up and dinner cooked when I get home from school in the evening. They know that's the only way things are going to work out."
She admits she has a "full plate," but she has no doubt that, with the help of her kids and her husband, Rick, she will walk across the stage in four year and become "Dr. Horn."
